The stop-light (a red light going on when the brake pedal is pressed) is a great invention. However, it has a serious drawback: it gives a warning to the driver following you only after you have started to brake. Quite often such a warning appears too late: the driver following you needs to take her/his foot off the acceleration pedal and then brake, while you are already braking.

There have been many attempts to find a better solution, e.g. to display signals corresponding to the:

(1)  position of the acceleration pedal; or

(2)  pressure in the manifold.

All these failed.

But what does the SLAB do ?
The SLAB displays the STATUS OF THE ACCELERATION of the car in front: the information, which is the most relevant, and the only one that you really need to minimize a chance of the front-back collision.

The SLAB displays at the rear of a vehicle:

1

in its simplest (conservative) version, the negative value of the acceleration of this vehicle, i.e. the retarded motion of the vehicle.

2

in its advanced version, the negative and positive values of the acceleration of this vehicle, i.e. the retarded and accelerated motion of the vehicle; and

3

in its full version, the negative, zero and positive values of the acceleration of this vehicle, i.e. the retarded (braking), uniform and accelerated motion of the vehicle;

The SLAB puts you on the alert not at the time a car in front of you brakes, but at the time it slows down (a driver of the car takes her/his foot off the acceleration pedal), i.e. at the time the car makes the step preceding braking
.

The SLAB does not replace the stoplight; it co-exists with the stop-light to make your driving much safer.
